Alternating current (AC) can accelerate environmental degradation of concrete power poles. This article uses field and laboratory test results to explain the effects of 380-V AC stray current and the environment on the durability of concrete power poles.

Two kinds of concrete power poles have been used in Iran: circular cross section (CCS) and rectangular cross section (RCS) poles. The manufacturing procedure for CCS poles is different from the procedure used to fabricate RCS poles. The CCS pole is made by the centrifugal method and super plasticizer is not added to the concrete mix design. Also, rebar for CCS poles is pre-stressed and applies compressive force on the pole. This is useful for controlling pole vibration from external forces, which increases pole durability.
